Gergely Péterfy

Imre Nagy: From the Notes of a Veteran Reader

Olga. I have read in several places that Gergely Péterfy’s new novel, The Bullet That Killed Pushkin (Budapest, Kalligram, 2019), is an excellent work, and some have added that in terms of quality it is worthy of the author’s previous novel, Stuffed Barbarian, which earned both reader and critical acclaim. This is indeed a major, distinguished book, but this time I also have some reservations. I already have issues with its title. It is true that the tragic duel in which a French adventurer named d’Anthès took the life of Pushkin, who sought to defend his wife’s honor, in 1837 is mentioned in five places.
