Gergely Péterfy

East of Everything, or a Romanian Spy in the Weiss Family

Year of publication:2018

This volume contains Gergely Péterfy’s public affairs essays written between 2013 and 2016.
From the perspective of the traditions of humanism and the Enlightenment, and drawing on the experience of the Eastern European intelligentsia, he uses literary and subjective tools to trace the shift to the right in Hungarian politics and society, the spread of propaganda underpinning Russian ideological and economic expansion, and the intellectual and economic failure of Hungary’s integration into Europe. *East of Everything* is a ruthless yet ironic portrait of contemporary Hungary; it can also be read as a follow-up to and a timely appendix to the author’s Aegon Prize-winning epic novel, *The Stuffed Barbarian*.

Reader reviews

So far, I’ve only read *The Stuffed Barbarian* by Gergely Pétéfy. I liked it. A friend of mine drew my attention to this volume. It contains the author’s public affairs commentary written between 2013 and 2016. The volume offers an excellent snapshot of Hungary today. The author alternates between irony and vitriolic remarks. Every chapter is permeated by a concern over a regression to the distant past. He tries to find an answer to how we got here. He writes with admirable honesty.
