At the time of the novel&#8217;s events, Pannonia is not yet a region inhabited by Hungarians, but rather a province of the vast Western Roman Empire, crisscrossed by barbarian hordes. The narrated events would occur sometime around the 440s, as according to the text, the characters live to see the day &#8220;<em>when the Romans abandoned Pannonia.<\/em>&#8221; (235.) At this time, Flavius A\u00ebtius, magister utriusque militi\u00e6, is no longer able to exercise his power practically in Pannonia, Africa, and Britannia.
